The plant will be opened in three different phases, with a capacity of 300 MW expected to be reached as soon as in 2009.
"Solar power will become one of our main businesses," Mr Kenjiro Shigematsu, President of Sumco, said. Sumco, which is the second largest wafer maker (after Shin-Etsu Chemical Co Ltd) said this week that it intends to reach a capacity of 1.1 GW when it opens this plant.
Given the current material shortage in the industry, this news comes to confirm that additional capacity will become available, thus improving current suppy bottlenecks and helping the industry achieve its ambitious targets. Securing silicon will be a key factor for the success of this plant.
