World production of solar cells went up by 50% last year

Production increased to 3.8 GW globally, up 50% from 2007, according to ENN. Market sizes also reported.
The study includes both traditional, polysilicon-based solar cell technologies and new thin-film technologies. The biggest rise was seen in the latter, following a trend that started years ago. Indeed, more and more companies are investing a lot of money on research of thin film technologies, especially in Silicon Valley.

The report placed Japan, China, Germany, Taiwan, and the United States as the top manufacturing countries, which China recording the most impressive growth of all, after tripling its 2006 production.

As concerns market sizes, Germany, Japan, the United States, and Spain are on top, mainly thanks to positive incentives programs.

With prices expected to drop in the second half of 2008, we will likely see even greater production and market expansions during this year. It remains to be seen, whether the support programs of countries such as Spain (where the current ones will expire in September) keep on offering amazing room for growth.
