BOEM Director Talks Future of U.S. Offshore Wind

The Business Network for Offshore Wind has launched Season 3 of its popular Offshore Wind Insider podcast. Released monthly, the podcast features conversations with industry trailblazers covering all aspects of the offshore wind industry and pressing topics, from clean energy development, diversity and inclusion, to job creation. The latest episode, released today, features Amanda Lefton, newly appointed Director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), to discuss the future of offshore wind in the U.S.

The Biden Administration has made clear that offshore wind is a critical part of America’s growing renewable energy portfolio – and it boasts an increasing number of women leading this effort. Director Lefton joined the podcast to discuss the Biden Administration's focus on offshore wind, the recent release of the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Vineyard Wind project, and how BOEM is beginning to think about the permitting framework for future floating offshore wind projects in federal waters.

“The Biden Administration sent ripples through the offshore wind industry by issuing the Executive Order Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad, which includes a goal of doubling offshore wind by 2030,” said Brandon Burke, podcast host and vice president for policy and regulatory engagement at the Business Network for Offshore Wind. “BOEM’s role is pivotal to establishing a U.S.-based offshore wind industry —from energy generation to job creation. Director Lefton provides a clear vision  for U.S. offshore wind in 2021 and beyond.”

The Offshore Wind Insider podcast launched in 2018 as the first podcast dedicated to the growing global offshore wind energy industry. It features conversations with industry trailblazers covering key topics of the offshore wind industry, including permitting, leasing, stakeholder engagement, and new offshore wind regions from the federal government; state approaches to offshore wind ports and the transmission question; as well as vessels, R&D, labor and workforce development, project updates, and more.

“The Offshore Wind Insider podcast is a global platform that provides updates on the offshore wind industry and key conversations with industry leaders,” added Burke. “From CEOs of global companies to key policymakers, Offshore Wind Insider is the best way to stay ‘in-the-know’, whether you’re in Europe, South America, New Zealand, India, Africa, or coastal California and Maine.”
