Vestas awarded 63MW wind power order in the Phillipines

The Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has won a new, 63MW, order in the Phillipines for EDC Burgos Wind Power Corporation
Vestas awarded 63MW wind power order in the Phillipines

Vestas will supply 29 V90-3.0 turbines to the Burgos Wind Project (BWP) Stage 2, thereby raising the total capacity of the project from 87MW to 150MW. The contract covers delivery, installation and commissioning of the turbines as well as associated electrical and civil engineering works and a 10-year AOM5000 service contract. Delivery of the turbines will take place in the second quarter of 2014.

The site presently covers approximately 600 hectares across three barangays: Saoit, Poblacion, and Nagsurot, at Burgos, Ilocos Norte. Electricity generated by the facility will be supplied to the Luzon-Visayas grid via a 115kV transmission line to the Laoag substation operated by the National Grid Corporation of the Phillipines (NGCP). EDC has access to funding and has a transmission Interconnection Agreement with NGCP for the project.

“We have long prepared for this project and we are determined to achieve commerciality at the soonest possible time so we can supply the Luzon grid with clean, sustainable wind energy” said EDC chairman and chief executive officer Federico Lopez. “The project is aligned with the long-term strategic direction of First Gen Corporation (the parent company of EDC). It will displace an equivalent of about 129,000 tons of carbon emissions annually and will definitely help mitigate climate change. The project is also congruent with our vision at First Philippine Holdings Corporation of “uplifting lives by creating value in key industries and infrastructure that advance national development.”

The EDC Wind Power Corporation is an affiliate of the Energy Development Corporation (EDC). It is aiming to commission the $300 million facility in 2014. Once operational, the project is expected to generate approximately 233 GWh annually and power over a million households.  It will augment the Luzon grid’s dependable capacity which needs an additional 4,200 MW in the next ten years due to the projected 4.5 per cent annual increase in electricity demand.

The project will generate a significant number of jobs, boost economic activity in the province, and contribute to the national effort to develop clean and green energy resources and reduce dependence on imported oil.

Of the 12,069 MW total capacity in Luzon, 5,923 MW or 49.07 per cent is currently sourced from imported fuels, including 4,172 MW from coal and 1,751 MW from oil.

EDC will sell the electrical output to be generated by the project under a Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) system established under the Phillipines Renewable Energy Act of 2008.
